What is Yoga Therapy?

As a yoga therapist one of the biggest challenges in my work is letting people know what I do. You've probably heard of yoga but not many people have heard of yoga therapy. In a nutshell, yoga therapy brings together the ancient wisdom of yoga with a modern, scientific understanding of the body and mind to help you improve your physical and mental health. Therapeutic yoga can be applied in numerous situations to support people through a variety of different health conditions. It's brings together skills of yoga, physiotherapy and psychotherapy to create a holistic and person centred approach to healing.


Yoga therapy is a compassionate and holistic process in which each person is treated as an individual and supported to take an active role in their healing. Your unique situation, lifestyle, and history are taken into consideration to create a personalised plan that addresses both your physical and emotional needs. Yoga Therapy can be incredibly beneficial for those seeking relief from illness or injury, as well as those looking to take a more proactive approach to their health and well-being.


A yoga therapist differs from a yoga teacher in that they have received extensive training in a range of different health conditions and have an in-depth understanding of the body and mind. This means that they are able to skillfully apply the principles of yoga to help people improve their physical and mental health.


During a yoga therapy session you are given space and time to explore different practices to ensure you feel safe and confident to continue to use them at home. The therapeutic nature of this process aims to help you gain better understanding of yourself and your situation. Through this process you can gain insights that can help you to make lasting changes to improve your quality of life and build healthier habits.
